Trip to Merida: Mp3s

Dear Partners,

below you will find a number of pictures divided in two categories. First, an OSCUS student, then a piece from the Roman Art Museum we are visiting next Tuesday.

Together with them, a link. If you click it you will listen a track of flamenco with a description of a piece from the Roman Art Museum. These descriptions were saved by OSCUS students.

1. Audio Number 1: Rubén and Chronos

Rubén depicts Chronos, a sculpture of a Roman God. Chronos was discovered in Mérida in the XXth Century and has a Lion on his chest.

2. Audio Number 2: María and Roman Coin


Maria depicts a Roman Coin. These coins were struck to promote the city. Augustus head and 'Emerita Augusta' appears on the sides of the coins

3. Audio Number 3: Nishana and Column of Temple of Diana

Nishana depicts a Column of Temple Diana. This column has a stuccoed surface. It is exceptionally well conserved. It has a Corinthian style.

4. Audio Number 4: Montaña and The Galloping Horse

Montaña depicts a horse discovered in 1924 in Mérida. This horse is injured and has blood in its body. Because of that it is thought to be a horse that took part in a battle.

5. Audio Number 5: Martin and the Gypsy


Martin depicts a Roman Girl called 'Little Gypsy Girl'. It is made in marble and she has two holes in her ears because earrings was a feature in fashion in Rome.

Audio Number 6: Laura and 'Painting from the Amphitheatre'



Laura depicts a painting which decorated the Amphitheare of Mérida. The image is a typical one: a man hunting a lion, which was very common in Roman times. The conservation of this image is very good.

Audio Number 7: Marino and the Tombstone


Marino depicts a Roman Tombstone: This tombstone where placed where a number of people were buried. This tombstone conserves the inscriptions. People named in the inscription were a family of prosperous freed slaves.

Audio Number 8: Roberto and the 'Bell'.

Roberto depicts a Roman Bell. It is made of clay and represents a male figure with a grotesque head. Word 'TYDIDES' is engraved in the figure, which is possibly the name of the owner.

Audio Number 9: Marcos 'Veiled Augustus'

Marcos depicts Veiled Augustus. This Masterpiece was found in the Roman Theatre of Mérida. It is a portrait dedicated to the cult of the Emperor. This piece is a portrait of Augustus in marble.

Audio Number 10: Ignacio depicts the 'Boar Hunt Mosaic'

Ignacio depicts a mosaic that represents the hunt of a boar. These mosaics were usually found in the houses of noble and rich people and are made of tiny pieces of stones called 'tesselae'.

Audio Number 11: Carmen depicts Mérida

Carmen depicts Mérida. Mérida is the Capital of Extremadura. It is an internationally well-known town specially for it's Roman Ruins. With a population over 50,000 people, it was declared Unesco World Heritage site in 1993. Mérida was founded in the year 25 BC with the name of Emerita Augusta. Merida was the capital of the Lusitania Province, one of the most important during Roman times. Merida's main attractions are:

- Roman Bridge over Guadiana River
- Temple of Diana
- Aqueduct of Miracles

Audio Number 12: Guillermo depicts Mérida's Roman Theatre


Guillermo depicts Mérida's Roman Theatre. This Theater is world famous and nowadays home of one of the most important Theatre Arena in Spain. It was built in the year 16 BC with the typical Roman model.
